Premier League star Antoine Semenyo could be set for a big money move in January, but his current club Bournemouth wouldn't be the only beneficiaries.

Premier League star Antoine Semenyo is being linked with a big money move in the January transfer window, but his current club Bournemouth wouldn't be the only financial beneficiaries, were this to come to pass.

One of the surprise packages of the Premier League so far have been AFC Bournemouth.

The Cherries reached second place in the Premier League with a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the end of October, and while two successive defeats since then have bumped them down to 9th, they remain just a point off 4th place and a Champions League place.

One of the star performers behind this stellar start to the season has been their Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo, but this upswing in form has grabbed the attention of some of the Premier League's big beasts, and the news, as reported by The Athletic, that Semenyo has a £65 million release clause in his contract makes a January move elsewhere all the more likely.

But there is one club who might be cheering from the sidelines in the event that this transfer comes to pass, and that would be the club at which he started his professional career in 2017, Bristol City.

Bristol City would make a minimum of £11 million if Antoine Semenyo is sold in January

Bristol Live have reported that the sell-on clause in Semenyo's contract is for 20% of any sale, and that this would be worth a minimum of £11 million to Bristol City were he to be sold for that release clause figure of £65 million.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United spent a lot of money on attacking players during the summer, with Liverpool spending a vast amount on Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, while Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko all heading to Old Trafford.

But with Arsenal four points clear at the top of the Premier League, neither of these two giants have had perfect starts to 2025-26, and this may tempt them to dip into their transfer kitties again to tempt Semenyo away from The Vitality Stadium in January.

And that amount could yet increase, were both clubs to enter into a bidding war for the player at the start of next year. Bristol Live's report confirms that, "Bournemouth have reportedly and reluctantly 'acknowledged' that his destiny lies beyond their control, with a January departure remaining feasible."

Semenyo sell-on money would be a huge windfall for Bristol City

Despite summer transfer speculation, Antoine Semenyo only signed a contract extension with Bournemouth during the summer, tying him to the club until 2030. But the existence of that release clause means that it may only be six months from him having signed it to leaving the club.

Such a sale would mean that Bristol City more than doubled their money from Semenyo, who signed for Bournemouth in a deal worth £10 million in the January 2023 transfer window.

Antoine Semenyo was a hit at Ashton Gate. He first joined the club as a 17-year-old in 2017, but had a slow start to his senior career, being loaned out to non-league Bath City, Newport County and Sunderland before having his breakthrough season with Bristol City in 2020-21, when he scored twice in 44 outings for the Robins. He stayed with the club for a season and a half before his move up to the Premier League.

This would be a lot of money for a Championship club who are not in receipt of Premier League parachute payments. It would be worth around the same amount that Bristol City will receive this season in broadcasting money. In a division in which the financial gap between those who receive parachute payments is huge, such a windfall could be significant for them.

Having already lost such players as Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi and Dan Ouattara during the summer, Antoine Semenyo's departure would be another big loss to Bournemouth, but Bristol City could certainly be forgiven hoping fervently that a deal to sell him be agreed, if not in January then certainly next summer.
