The former Blades captain made the move to the ambitious Blues on deadline day

Birmingham City made a splash throughout the summer transfer window, as Tom Wagner and co ensured that Chris Davies had as many resources as necessary to achieve their lofty ambitions on the pitch.

The Blues' chairman outlined his aims to pick up a second straight promotion to the Premier League this season following their League One title win last term. Therefore, he bolstered his side with 12 new additions, most of whom hold high-level Championship pedigree.

None more so than experienced defender Jack Robinson, who turned 32 on the day of the switch from Sheffield United to Birmingham. The centre-back was the captain and a consistent part of Chris Wilder's side last season, leading his side out at Wembley in the play-off final.

Having been at the club since 2020, Robinson had become an important part of the Blades side during his time at Bramall Lane, but after a poor start to the 2025/26 campaign, Sheffield United were happy to part ways, and traditionally, when Birmingham comes calling, players find it tough to turn down.

The Blues have recently become well-renowned for the amount of money they have coming into the club under Tom Wagner, and therefore can afford to spend a lot on player incomings.

However, Robinson was an important first-team player at a club that had recent Premier League seasons under their belt, and his wage at Bramall Lane reflected that, as he earned £25,000 per week during his final two years at Sheffield United, according to Capology's estimates.

Compared to his new wage at Birmingham, which is estimated to be £17,500 per week over both years of his two-year deal, the 32-year-old has actually taken a pay cut at his new club.

Robinson's new wage, however, does put him near the top of the earners list at his new club, with only Bright Osayi-Samuel, Marvin Ducksch, Demarai Gray and Kyogo Furuhashi estimated to be earning more than the former Blade.

Jack Robinson is still an important first-team player, despite wage decrease at Birmingham City

Ultimately, whilst the general discourse surrounding Birmingham's finances indicates to many that they are free to throw top-end Championship wages at several different players, the reality is that it isn't true.

Indeed, the Blues' wage bill is higher than that of your average newly promoted side out of League One, but expectations that they'd be able to match the likes of Leicester City, Southampton, or even Sheffield United immediately - sides who have recently been in the Premier League - were way off.

Robinson will still be seen as one of Chris Davies' more important players going forward this season due to the experience and leadership he brings to the side, and in his first game for the club, he helped keep a much-needed clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Swansea City.

The 32-year-old may be earning less, but with the number of defensive additions his former side made over the summer, he's likely to be playing more at St Andrew's than he would have at Bramall Lane this season.
