Norwich City are expected to reach an agreement worth £21m with Wolfsburg for striker Josh Sargent.
Norwich City are in ‘advanced talks’ with Wolfsburg over a deal for Josh Sargent that could be worth around £21m.
Ever since the Canaries missed out on promotion last season, they have known that it would be difficult to retain Sargent, as the attacker enjoyed another productive goalscoring campaign.
The USA international found the net 15 times in 32 games, as well as registering five assists, so it’s no surprise that he has attracted plenty of transfer attention.
Burnley and Leeds United had been credited with an interest in the 25-year-old, but it is Wolfsburg who are set to prise Sargent away from Carrow Road.
That’s after Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett revealed that the German side are ‘close’ to reaching an agreement with Norwich over a transfer that could be worth £21m.
He also adds that Sargent has informed the Championship side that he wants to return to the Bundesliga, having previously turned out for Werder Bremen earlier in his career.
It felt inevitable that Borja Sainz and Sargent would leave Norwich, as the two were a class above most of their teammates last season, and they’re clearly capable of playing at a higher level.
Sainz has joined FC Porto for around £14.25m, which is a decent fee, and this would be another good sale for Norwich if they reach a £21m agreement for Sargent.
Norwich deserve credit for sticking to their valuation of Sargent, who still had three years to run on his contract. From the perspective of the striker, he has ambitions of playing for the USA at the World Cup next year, and playing in a top five league will only increase his chances of getting selected by Mauricio Pochettino.
Now, for Norwich, it’s about using the money they have brought in to strengthen Liam Manning’s squad as a whole, and these two high-profile sales should give them plenty of room to do just that.
The arrival of Mathias Kvistgaarden was a statement of intent, and fans will be hoping that they can attract more players of that calibre over the coming weeks.
So, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, and all connected to the club will appreciate what Sargent has done over the years, and they will no doubt wish him well at Wolfsburg providing this does go through.
