Joao Pedro has been linked with a big money move away from Brighton this summer

Watford are in line for a big payday if Joao Pedro is sold by Brighton this summer amid interest from Newcastle United and Chelsea.

According to the Watford Observer, the Championship club could be set to earn 20 per cent on any profit the Seagulls earn from the forward’s departure.

Pedro signed for the Premier League side in the summer of 2023, making the switch in a deal worth a reported £30 million, via the Guardian.

In his two seasons at the Amex, the 23-year-old has contributed 19 goals and nine assists from 58 appearances in the Premier League.

Joao Pedro sell-on clause

It has been claimed that Watford negotiated a sell-on clause in their deal to sell Pedro two years ago.

It is believed that the Hornets will be owed up to 20 per cent of anything Brighton earn over the £30 million they initially paid to sign him.

It was reported by The Telegraph earlier this month that Newcastle are interested in a move for the Brazilian, with it also previously being written that Chelsea are eyeing a move this summer.

It’s understood that a fee of £60 million will be required to convince Brighton to sell the forward.

This would reportedly net Watford up to £6 million, if it came to fruition, which would be a welcome chunk of change at Vicarage Road.

However, it remains to be seen whether a deal will go through just yet, with no official offers yet received.

Joao Pedro’s impact at Watford

Pedro played for Watford in four seasons, although it was in his second campaign where he became a key part of the side.

The forward scored nine times in the Championship during the 2020/21 season, helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League.

He made 28 appearances in the top flight as Watford suffered relegation straight back to the second tier, scoring three times that year.

Pedro’s final season with the Hornets led to him scoring 11 goals from 35 appearances, as the team finished 11th in the table, leading to his £30 million departure.

Joao Pedro windfall would be great business for Watford

When Watford sold Pedro, the £30 million fee was a great bit of business for the player, especially after an underwhelming year for the club back in the Championship.

And he has continued to go from strength to strength at Brighton, becoming a key part of their first team squad.

This could now lead to an extra bit of cash being injected this summer, which would be fantastic business.

Watford will be delighted if they earn as much as £6 million, especially for a player who left the club two years ago, and that is money that could be reinvested back into the side this summer.
