When Leicester City fell from the Premier League at the end of last season, it was clear that they would lose players.

And to a point, this was necessary. Their wage bill was still at a Premier League level and their financial issues have been much-discussed.

One player who left the club in August was full-back James Justin, who departed for Leeds United in a deal worth up to a reported £10 million a week before the summer transfer window slammed shut.

But the transfer fee wasn't the only financial matter that needed to be wrapped up before a transfer could be agreed, and Justin and Leeds also reached personal terms over this.

James Justin received a modest pay increase for his Leeds transfer

It might be expected that a player making a step up from the Championship might be in line for a huge pay increase for doing so, but this hasn't been the case with James Justin.

The full-back's wage with Leeds United is estimated by Capology to be £35,000-a-week, but this is only an increase of £5,000-a-week on the £30,000-a-week that he was estimated to be on at Leicester.

This isn't, of course, an amount of money that can be scoffed at.

But what it does essentially mean that Justin was on a Premier League salary even though his team was relegated at the end of last season. And this was - and in many cases remains - the case with a lot of Leicester's players.

James Justin has a skill-set that will benefit Leeds in the Premier League

Leeds are getting a lot of defender for their money. Over the eight years since he made his senior debut for Luton Town, James Justin has run up almost 300 appearances in all competitions for Luton Town and Leicester City. And his talent was recognised young.

He was capped by England at under-20 and under-21 levels early in his career, and then picked up a full cap when he was selected to start against Hungary in June 2022, although an injury forced his withdrawal from that match at half-time, and he hasn't returned to the fold since.

Full-backs have become increasingly important in the modern game, and Justin offers something rare in that he can play this position on either side of the pitch, although he has a clear preference for the right. In a game that is increasingly squad-orientated, that's a rare commodity to bring into a club. He made his debut for Leeds with a ten-minute cameo from the bench in their goalless draw against Newcastle United on the weekend before the international break.

James Justin's pay increase for making this move won't have been the only reason why the transfer made sense for him, of course. If he can get regular game-time at Leeds, he could even find himself back in the reckoning for a place in the England squad, and then there's the simple fact that the Premier League is considered 'the place to be'. But with a decent transfer fee bagged and a substantial wage off their books, Justin's move to Elland Road is probably a good move for Leicester as well.
