How much will Barcelona earn from playing Villarreal in the USA? | OneFootball

UEFA has authorised that the LaLiga Matchday 17 fixture between Villarreal and FC Barcelona be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 20 December, instead of at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

The decision by Europe’s governing body has not come without controversy, as several clubs view it as a distortion of the competition.

Irrespective of the complaints, the match will now go ahead in the USA, with La Liga president Javier Tebas also confirming the date for the same earlier today.

Financial boost for Barcelona

According to RAC1 (h/t SPORT), Barcelona and Villarreal will each receive between €5 million and €6 million from the game being moved to the USA.

The report adds that the Yellow Submarine are likely to earn slightly more to compensate for the lost revenue from ticket sales at El Madrigal, where the game was initially scheduled to be played.

A sum of €5 million may not seem that big, but can be a welcome boost to the Catalan club’s finances, especially if there are plans to enter the market for reinforcements in the January transfer window.

As reported earlier this week, Hansi Flick & co. might consider exploring the idea of signing a versatile full-back during the winter transfer window.

The game, in itself, will mark history as it will be the first-ever La Liga match to be played outside of Spain.

The league president, Tebas, has been trying to arrange a match in foreign nations for some time now, but failed in his previous two attempts.

But, it is third time lucky for the La Liga chief, while Barcelona and Villarreal will welcome the revenue from the match.
