A recent report from AS has revealed a fascinating detail about Real Madrid’s transfer strategy in the summer of 2023.
The club had identified David Soria as a potential replacement for Thibaut Courtois. However, the move never materialised and the reason was Andriy Lunin.
At the time, uncertainty surrounded Madrid’s goalkeeping hierarchy.
Former manager Carlo Ancelotti reportedly informed Lunin that he was not central to his plans and suggested he look elsewhere for more regular playing time.
Tension grew during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States, where Lunin had a heated exchange with goalkeeping coach Luis Llopis.
Trusting Ancelotti’s assessment, the club began exploring alternatives. Soria quickly emerged as the preferred option.
The Getafe goalkeeper, who had previously spent time in Madrid’s youth system before leaving for Atletico due to limited opportunities, was close to returning to the club.
However, negotiations were not straightforward, as Soria himself had doubts about joining as a backup to Courtois, knowing minutes would be limited. Meanwhile, Getafe and Madrid struggled to agree on a transfer fee.

Despite those obstacles, an agreement seemed within reach.
Everything changed when Lunin made his position clear. “I’m not leaving.”
Those three words changed Madrid’s plans entirely, as the Ukrainian believed he could compete at the highest level and was determined to prove it.
Ultimately, his patience paid off. During the 2023-24 season, Lunin was handed opportunities and responded impressively, earning recognition as one of the standout goalkeepers of the campaign.
Had he accepted Ancelotti’s suggestion, David Soria might have worn the Madrid shirt once again.
Instead, Lunin’s refusal created one of those classic transfer “what if” moments that define football history.
Sometimes, a single decision is enough to alter an entire storyline.
