Sheffield Wednesday are seeking a new prospective buyer following the collapse of James Bord's offer to buy the club

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to secure a new preferred bidder as quickly as possible following the collapse of James Bord’s offer to buy the club.

The Owls have been in administration since October, and the former poker player’s consortium had agreed a deal to buy the Championship side in December.

However, their offer of £48.7 million was rescinded in February, leaving the club back at square one in their attempt to find a new owner.

Dejphon Chansiri’s previous ownership proved a disaster, with the team struggling with significant financial issues in his final months in charge.

Henrik Pedersen’s side were docked a total of 18 points by the EFL for breaches of their rules, which included a failure to comply with the financial regulations.

The likes of Mike Ashley and the Storch family have both emerged as potential buyers following the collapse of Bord’s offer, and it is hoped a preferred bidder could be named this week.

According to Sky Sports, the EFL are ready to move quickly once administrators Begbies Traynor have named their choice for the preferred bidder.

The league will need to ratify the proposal once an agreement is reached with the administrators, and it proved a stumbling block with the Bord bid earlier this year.

The Owls were waiting for ratification of their offer for almost two months before it was confirmed that the deal was no longer on the table.

However, time is now of the essence and Sheffield Wednesday could run out of money in the coming months, which would put the club at risk of liquidation — although it’s been reported they have funds to the end of the season.

It’s believed that the EFL are now ready to work quickly with the next preferred bidder in order to speed up the ratification process.

There were doubts surrounding Bord’s consortium due to his background in the gambling and crypto industry, and the number of people involved in the deal led to more background checks than initially hoped.

The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) will take over the ratification process if it drags onto the end of the season, but it may not get to that stage.

Ashley and the Storch family have both reportedly made offers last week, with neither reaching the £30 million reserve price.

It has been claimed that the Storch family are currently the front-runners to be the prospective new Sheffield Wednesday owners.

Pedersen’s side have already been officially relegated to League One, and a failure to pay all creditors at 25p on the pound is likely to incur a fresh 15 point penalty for next season.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters should be encouraged by takeover urgency

Sheffield Wednesday have been in administration since October, so nothing regarding this takeover has been done quickly by any means.

But it will be a relief to supporters that there is a great sense of urgency now regarding finding a new buyer and getting their takeover over the line as quickly as possible.

Whether it is David Storch or Ashley, the stability that they can provide and guarantee that the team will survive this ordeal will be a great step forward.

It will be disappointing to start next season on the backfoot, but it goes to show that getting out of this situation and back to a competitive level will be a long-term process as a result of the damage done during Chansiri’s ownership.
