Number 137 in the FIFA rankings, Latvia is not a nation that is known for its football. Despite this, they have managed to pick up five points from their six qualifiers so far. Their best result undoubtedly being a 1-1 draw at home with Albania. However, Latvia drew 2-2 with minnows Andorra last time out and they will be massive underdogs when England visit.
England have maintained a perfect record throughout their qualifiers so far – winning five out of five. Whilst there were grumbles about performances in some of those matches, particularly towards the end of last season, there has been a marked improvement in their last couple of outings. Tuchel will expect his side to get the job done quite comfortably in Riga and go into the game off the back of beating rivals Wales in a friendly.
“There was a significant shift in our attitude, in the way we played,” said England boss Tuchel on recent performances. “We had, of course, two very good two results, good performances lately against Serbia and against Wales.
“We want to take the next step. I feel this, I feel that we’re building something and going in the right direction.
“The spirit and the momentum is clearly there. The players are fully focused. They trained with an awareness, they trained with joy, they trained with a lot of quality – you can sense it.”
“We win together, we defend and we attack together,” goalkeeper Jordan Pickford added. “The defence starts from up top really. It’s all eleven of us putting a shift in and when I’m called upon, I’ll make the saves.”
Latvia manager Paolo Nicolato admitted: “Sometimes it is like another sport playing against these teams.
“They could put five international teams on the pitch with the players they have. They also have the best league in the world at this moment.”
