The Merseyside Derby returns this weekend as Liverpool welcome Everton to Anfield in a contest that feels charged with possibility. For Arne Slot’s Liverpool, the stakes are high: four wins from four in the Premier League and a Champions League triumph over Atletico Madrid in midweek have fostered belief in the season so far. Yet, derbies rarely respect form.
Virgil van Dijk’s stoppage-time header against Atletico summed up the Reds’ season so far — late drama, resilience, and an edge of vulnerability. New signing Alexander Isak featured for 58 minutes on his debut but remains in search of his first Liverpool goal. Arne Slot may be tempted to rotate, with Hugo Ekitike pressing for a return to the starting XI.
Across Stanley Park, Everton approach the derby with uncharacteristic optimism. David Moyes’ return has reinvigorated the Toffees, who sit sixth after wins over Brighton and Wolves. Central to that revival is Jack Grealish, loaned from Manchester City and already with four assists in as many games. His creativity has given Everton the cutting edge they have long lacked.

Moyes will, however, be without defenders Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko. That may force the Scot into a more pragmatic setup, though he could spring a surprise by handing Thierno Barry or Tyler Dibling their first Premier League starts.

It has been four years since Everton last tasted victory at Anfield. Yet this version of Moyes’ team looks capable of asking questions, particularly if they start quickly and exploit Liverpool’s occasional sloppiness in transition.
Liverpool’s habit of leaving it late was evident against Burnley, where Mohamed Salah’s 94th-minute penalty sealed the points. Everton, sharper and more confident than in seasons past, may sense an opportunity to unsettle their neighbours.
However Liverpool at this stage seem to win regardless of performance, I’ll go for a 2-1 Liverpool win.
