The Andoni Iraola era gets underway

Liverpool face Sunderland this evening in the first match of Andoni Iraola’s tenure with the club.

The Spaniard, formerly of Bournemouth, was appointed head coach earlier this summer following the surprise dismissal of Arne Slot, whose dismal Premier League title defence was ultimately deemed substandard.

The Reds embark on a new era far from home in Nashville, Tennessee, where they face the Black Cats before turning attention to matches against Wrexham, Leeds, Monaco and Como.

The squad presently at Iraola’s disposal is far from full strength, with several key players injured or still recovering from the World Cup.

The likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Alexander Isak are all yet to join up, with Cody Gakpo also still absent. Hugo Ekitike is continuing in his recovery from an Achilles rupture, while Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are in similar situations.

Even so, the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, who recently signed a new five-year deal, and Rio Ngumoha are both expected to feature, as will Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

The primary aim for this match will be getting minutes in the legs, but Iraola will be keen to get his tenure started with victory.
