Newcastle have won their last two in a row, including a big 3-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Benfica. They also edged past Fulham 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Bruno Guimaraes. However, their form has not been perfect, having lost two of their last six fixtures in all competitions. Those came against Arsenal and Brighton in the Premier League.
Tottenham’s had been struggling since the international break, but a 3-0 win over Everton at the Hill-Dickinson Stadium has eased some nerves amongst Spurs fans. Before that Tottenham had only won two of their last seven in all competitions, including a loss at home against Aston Villa.
Howe’s side are looking to defend the EFL Cup trophy and he spoke about how it felt to win the competition last season.
“That feeling was incredible,” he said. “One of the big drivers once you’ve experienced that is you want it again and again as quickly as possible.
“We don’t have unlimited opportunities for that so this is one of those chances to go far in a competition, go deep and try and repeat the experience. These early rounds are really difficult. It leaves us on no uncertain terms of what we have to do.”
Thomas Frank explained the importance winning trophies like the EFL Cup ahead of the match.
“I think it was very clear that we’re in this game because we love it and if you are in a club like Tottenham, we would like to do whatever we can to win. I said from the beginning, I’d like to be able to compete in every tournament.
“We have an opportunity in a tournament where we play, not tomorrow, but Wednesday, against a very strong team. The holders. They have done very well, a very difficult place to play but we will go out there and do everything we can to compete and win and progress.”
