Eddie Howe has called for the Newcastle fans to bring the noise ahead of the club’s crucial clash with Chelsea this weekend.
Newcastle host Chelsea at St James’ Park on Sunday lunchtime, with both teams battling for Champions League qualification. Goal difference is all that splits the fourth-placed Magpies from Chelsea in fifth, ahead of a contest that could have huge ramifications on their respective seasons.
Newcastle have won five consecutive Premier League games on home soil and eliminated Chelsea from the Carabao Cup at St James’ earlier in the season.
Howe wants his side to ‘rise to the occasion’ and has urged the fans to back the side loudly.
“Our home form has been good, we have a great environment to play in, we need the crowd with us, it is imperative,” he said at his pre-match press conference.
“We know they will be there for us, and we have to perform for them. It is the kind of game that we need to rise to the occasion.”
Howe opened up on what he expects from Chelsea, who progressed to the Europa Conference League final on Thursday. The Blues have also found consistency in their league performances after a mid-season dip and beat newly-crowned champions Liverpool last weekend.
“We expect them to revert to their last league side, they performed very well against Liverpool, they have a lot of attacking players back in form so it should be a good game. We have played Chelsea twice this season – we know their qualities. They have a lot of quality players; they have found consistency in their league side.”
