Our Huddersfield Fan Pundit believes they could have added another spark to the squad
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
It was a relatively successful winter transfer window for Huddersfield Town.
Already doing well in League One, sitting in 5th position, the Terriers added the likes of Bolton Wanderers’ Dion Charles and Luton Town’s Joe Taylor to their frontline.
But there’s always room for improvement, and the same is true here of Huddersfield.
We asked our Huddersfield Fan Pundit, Graeme, for what he felt his side had missed in the January window.
Speaking to Football League World, Graeme said: “I think having looked at what we need, I think a creative midfielder with experience is what I would have prioritised.
“I know that others might say we should have prioritised replacing Michal Helik, but I think that someone who can play in an eight or ten role and unlock defences, have that ability and have it to be proven would be what I would say should have been our priority.
“I think that we've signed Tawanda Chirewa from Wolves on loan, but he's very much unproven. He's a raw talent and therefore an unknown quantity.
“He might well be someone that can do that at this level, but we simply don't know, and it's smacked a little bit of last minute, not a panic signing, but something close to that, I think. So I would say that would be something we should have done.”
Huddersfield were already doing well for goals, with plenty of players chipping in, leaving a balanced chart when looking at their top scorers.
But the additions of both Charles and Taylor add some real firepower.
Charles has notched 20 goals or more for the last two seasons with Bolton, while Taylor has hit double figures in short spaces of time while on loan with Lincoln City and Colchester United.
There’s little doubt there will be goals to come from the pair, but what could have made those signings even more potent was the addition of some more quality behind them, as Graeme mentions, a creator — to support the work of a player like Ben Wiles.
The loan signing of Chirewa shows there was a space in the squad for a player like this, so it would have been more beneficial for the Terriers to have their own player in that slot, creating goals and building value at the club simultaneously.
However, the fee for Taylor alone is reported to be in the region of £3million, which for a January signing would be considered strong investment in the Championship, never mind in League One.
Add to that the additions of the likes of Charles, and it may simply be that the Terriers ran out of budget when it came to adding midfield options, hence the loan deal for Chirewa.
A transfer window will scarcely ever be perfect, and there will be always little tweaks that in hindsight may have made it better, but there’s no denying that it was a positive window for Huddersfield on paper.
If they were going to amend anything, it’s likely they would have had a look at a permanent creative midfielder to add to the squad.
