Huddersfield Town are set to beat League One rivals Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday to the capture of a Sunderland goalkeeper...
Huddersfield Town are a club needing to challenge for automatic promotion from League One in 2026/27, even with the likes of Leicester City coming down with Sheffield Wednesday to potentially compete in the league and for transfer targets.
It could be argued that Town simply have to show greater ambition and consistency in 2026/27 after falling short of expectations since their relegation from the Championship. Finishing 10th and then ninth in League One is respectable on paper, but it is nowhere near where a club of Huddersfield's size and resources should be aiming.
The Terriers have spent two seasons treading water in the third tier, with neither Lee Grant nor Liam Manning able to deliver the turnaround supporters were hoping for.
Now, Martin Drury and the club's hierarchy face a crucial summer. Recruitment needs to be stronger, the squad needs more quality and depth, and there must be a clear plan to bridge the gap to the division's leading sides.
With Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford City, Leicester City, and several other ambitious clubs likely to be in the mix, Huddersfield cannot afford another season of underachievement if they want to challenge for promotion. They will often be eyeing the same targets, with quality sought to achieve their goal of promotion.

One goalkeeper has been making waves in the EFL in recent seasons, with Sunderland's 19-year-old Matty Young having had two separate stints on loan with Salford City following a successful 2023/24 campaign with Darlington. MK Dons have been linked to Young already in this window.
Young has made 77 appearances for Salford in 2024/25 and 2025/26, keeping 25 clean sheets in that time. That includes 50 appearances and 16 clean sheets in the most recent campaign, albeit not in the play-off final against Notts County at Wembley.
He's unlikely to play in the fourth tier next season, with Young said to be attracting interest from Championship and League One clubs following his impressive loan spells away from Sunderland. He's got a bright future at the Stadium of Light after he signed a four-year contract with Sunderland last month, with the option of a further year.
Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester have been tipped to sign Young this summer, but Huddersfield are now in the mix to acquire the player, with Alan Nixon revealing the latest on the player. He claims that they are closing in on bringing Young in from Sunderland.
He reports that the Terriers were impressed by the top prospect on loan at Salford last season, and it is believed he is ready for League One. Nixon states that Sunderland are vetting clubs for Young, but insiders claim that Huddersfield will get the nod over Sheffield Wednesday or Leicester.

Young appears ready to take the next step in his development and test himself at League One level. The Sunderland ace has earned valuable senior experience during previous loan spells and has reached the stage where regular football in a competitive third-tier environment could accelerate his progress further.
At 19, he needs consistent minutes rather than academy football and that is why another EFL loan makes sense, with Huddersfield likely to challenge for promotion in 2026/27 and an excellent choice for his next steps in his development.
The Terriers are under pressure to compete towards the top end of the division, meaning Young would gain experience in meaningful matches rather than simply fighting relegation. He had this for Salford, but it's the logical step-up in league and in terms of expectations at a bigger club.
Much like with Sunderland, he would be playing for a club with strong infrastructure and high expectations, providing the ideal environment to prove he is capable of becoming Sunderland's long-term number one eventually.
