In recent years, Inter Milan’s financial issues have not been any big secret.

Things reached a sort of nadir in the summer of 2021.

Plagued by huge losses stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Inter sold star players Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku for huge fees.

And in the other direction, the Nerazzurri spent barely a fraction of what they brought in to sign replacements.

In 2022, Inter had a fairly quiet summer. Apart from the surprise return of Lukaku, the marquee arrivals were free transfers Andre Onana and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Then in 2023, Inter sold Onana for a massive fee to Manchester United. They also lost Milan Skriniar on a free transfer, having negotiation with Paris Saint-Germain the prior summer on a potential big money sale.

Last summer, meanwhile, was yet another quiet one for Inter.

The Nerazzurri signed Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski, two more notable free transfers. Then, they made modest investments in Josep Martinez and Tomas Palacios for the future.

This coming summer transfer window is set to be a bit different, though.

The Nerazzurri will certainly look to refresh what looks to be a rapidly aging squad.

Therefore, there will be at least a handful of signings. And the plan will certainly be to sign young players.

Oaktree by all accounts want to lower the average age of the squad as well as the wage bill. They also want to focus on players with big margins to improve, and resale value.

Signing younger players will naturally mean investing more than bringing in veterans.

And Oaktree Capital are ready to do exactly that.

But unlike in previous summer transfer windows, there is no hint that Inter will have to make big sacrifices.

Of course, players will leave Inter this summer. And the club will naturally listen to offers that come along.

But there is no financial obligation for Inter to cash in on any of their biggest names.
