Hugo Broos has left his role as South Africa head coach following their World Cup round of 32 defeat by Canada.
A national football federation official said on Friday, according to AFP, that he had stepped down after the tournament and could continue with the national team in a different capacity.
Broos, 74, also confirmed his departure to the Belgian magazine Humo, adding that the federation wanted to keep him in a different role, potentially as an adviser.
Pitso Mosimane, who managed the national side from 2010 to 2012, is among the candidates to succeed the Belgian.
Appointed in 2021, Broos led Bafana Bafana to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, their best finish in the competition since 2000.
He then guided South Africa out of a World Cup group for the first time, reaching the 2026 round of 32, where they lost 1-0 to Canada.
