Hugo Souza overtakes Dida, joins Corinthians penalty stopper race

Goalkeeper Hugo Souza continues to achieve feats with the Corinthians jersey. In the 2-0 victory over Athletico-PR, on Wednesday, 10, in the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil, the number 1 defended his eighth penalty for the club and surpassed a historical record: that of Dida, a black and white idol and specialist in the subject. After the game, the goalkeeper highlighted the board's effort to make him available.

“It was intense hours. It was quite a rush, but I was able to arrive well for the game, rested. I thank the president and Fabinho, who made a huge effort to facilitate my quick return. I was able to help the team on the field. President, the bill is paid with the penalty. I am very happy to help the team and do my job in the best way”, he told SporTV.

Dida, in 95 games for Timão, caught seven penalties. Hugo has now reached eight in just 77 matches. The goalkeeper is now approaching the select group of the biggest penalty savers in the club's history: Cássio (32 saves), Ronaldo Giovanelli (27 saves) and Gylmar (11 saves).

Of the eight saves, four occurred in regular time, against Estêvão and Raphael Veiga (Palmeiras), Pablo Dyego (Novorizontino) and Benavídez (Athletico-PR). The other four were in penalty shootouts, against Bragantino and Grêmio, in the South American and Copa do Brasil 2023, respectively.

In total, Hugo faced 26 penalty kicks with the Corinthians jersey. There were 16 goals conceded, eight saves and two shots off target, maintaining a rate of 38.4% of penalties without conceding goals.
