Hugo Souza reaches 100 appearances for Corinthians in Paulistão win

On the evening of this Sunday (15), Corinthians overcame São Bernardo FC by 1-0 at Estádio Primeiro de Maio, in a match valid for the eighth and final round of the Campeonato Paulista. The match also marked an important milestone for Hugo Souza, who completed 100 appearances wearing the black and white shirt.

Signed in July 2024 on loan from Flamengo, the goalkeeper quickly built a significant trajectory at Parque São Jorge. During this period, he won the Campeonato Paulista, the Copa do Brasil, and the Supercopa Rei. In addition to the titles, he joined the select group of the club’s three greatest penalty stoppers in history, equaling Gylmar dos Santos Neves with 11 saved penalties.

Hugo’s arrival took place amid a turbulent scenario. That season, idol Cássio chose to leave CT Joaquim Grava and agreed to a transfer to Cruzeiro. Shortly after, then-starter Carlos Miguel also left the club after accepting an offer from English football, at a delicate moment when Corinthians was fighting against relegation.

Betting on the goalkeeper’s potential, Fabinho Soldado, then football executive, backed the signing of Hugo Souza. The keeper was coming off an inconsistent period at Flamengo and a relegation to the Portuguese Second Division with GD Chaves.

At Corinthians, however, his journey took a different turn. Hugo became the starter, gained confidence, and was a key player both in keeping the team in Série A and in knockout matches of the Copa do Brasil and Copa Sudamericana. His performance prompted the board to secure his permanent signing just four months after his arrival.

In the following season, he experienced one of his most memorable moments by saving Raphael Veiga’s penalty, from Palmeiras, in the Paulista final at Itaquera. Months later, he shone again by stopping Gabigol and helping eliminate Cruzeiro in the Copa do Brasil semifinal.

His consistent performances earned him call-ups to the Brazilian National Team. While continuing to defend Corinthians this season, Hugo Souza maintains his goal of playing in a World Cup after being included by Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti in the latest call-up lists for the Seleção.
