Antonin Kinsky’s performance was one of the main talking points during Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first leg tie on Tuesday evening.
Kinsky was at fault for two goals as Spurs lost their third consecutive game under interim manager Igor Tudor.
The Czech goalkeeper gifted Atleti the opening goal, slipping while taking a goal-kick, allowing Marcos Llorente to give the Spanish side the lead.
Kinsky then misjudged a back-pass, enabling Julian Alvarez to score Atleti’s third of the night in the 15th minute.
Two minutes later, Tudor took the 22-year-old out of the firing line, replacing him with Guglielmo Vicario.
Speaking while on commentary duty for the BBC, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson expressed his shock at Tudor’s decision.
“Wow, wow, wow. I have never seen that on a football pitch. What a huge call from the manager Igor Tudor.”
Robinson also warned that the substitution could have a psychological effect on the young goalkeeper.
“Yes, the goalkeeper was at fault but that is confidence destroying for Antonín Kinský,” Robinson added.
Kinsky joined Tottenham in January 2025 following the injury crisis in the club’s goalkeeping department.
The former Czech youth international has played second fiddle to Vicario but was handed a start against Atleti due to the Italian’s dip in form.
Kinsky’s display further highlights Spurs’ poor recruitment, which has played a part in their struggles, with the club sitting just one point clear of the relegation zone.
Vicario is expected to return to the starting line-up when Spurs take on Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
