Vincent Kompany speaks plainly after Bayern’s spectacular comeback in Mainz. The FCB coach clearly names the problems and at the same time praises his team’s reaction.
FC Bayern turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 away win at 1. FSV Mainz 05. After the game, Vincent Kompany had clear words for Munich’s weak first half.
„What went wrong in the first half? Everything,“ explained the Bayern coach. However, the Belgian did not want to judge the opening phase quite so simply: „Even if the first 20 minutes in front of the Mainz goal were not so bad. We had a lot of possession, but did not get into their penalty area.“
After Mainz took the lead, the record champions increasingly lost control of the game. The hosts became more courageous, repeatedly found spaces and put Munich’s defence under pressure with direct attacks. Kompany commented: „Then we concede three goals and it felt like they could have scored four or five.“

In the dressing room afterwards, the 40-year-old was not interested in a long tactical reappraisal. Despite the clear deficit, Kompany apparently focused primarily on a clear speech. „There was no big analysis at half-time. It was simply about quality and mentality,“ emphasized the Bayern coach.
After the break, his team showed a completely different face. Bayern took on the duels, increased the tempo and worked their way back into the match step by step. An almost hopeless 0:3 turned into a 4:3 victory in the end.
Kompany was particularly impressed by the reaction of his players. „The team took up the fight and put aside any fear of injury that might have held them back,“ said the coach. After the final whistle, it was clear how much this comeback meant to the Munich players: „They celebrated as if it had been a relegation match. I love that.“
