Harvey Elliott admits this season has been a difficult one because of a lack of playing time – and says he is uncertain what the future holds.
Elliott started and scored in Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton, with the Reds letting a 2-1 lead slip to lose after substitute Jack Hinshelwood’s winner.
But the 22-year-old has struggled for playing time this campaign, playing 17 times in the Premier League and largely being restricted to substitute appearances.
Asked if he showed what he could offer the team with his performance against Brighton, Elliott responded: “I think I’ve done that this season.
“It’s been hard with the amount I’ve played but I think I’ve tried as hard as I’ve could.
“Whatever happens, happens. It’s football, at the end of the day. In my opinion, I just need to do what’s best for my career.
“It’s a tough one. I think every player wants to play every single game and each and every minute but sometimes it’s not going to happen.
“It’s just about reflecting and seeing what I can do better in my position.
“I’m here at the moment, there’s one game left and I’m fully focused on that.”
Elliott’s goal gave the title winners the lead against Brighton before Yasin Ayari equalised.
Dominik Szoboszlai restored the visitors’ lead before the break but Kaoru Mitoma again equalised for the Seagulls before Hinshelwood’s winner.
Reflecting on the defeat, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: “It was an equal game. The moment we were 2-1 up, I felt us scoring the goal to make it 3-1 was more realistic.
“We didn’t score the third when we had chances to.
“It’s nice to see Harvey scored the goal. He had an assist, not the most difficult one.”
Liverpool will end the season at Anfield with a home clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
