In an interview with Téléfoot, William Saliba (24) has revealed why he chose to stay at Arsenal amid interest from other clubs, most notably Real Madrid. The France international defender has recently extended his stay at the Emirates by signing a new contract until 2030. His previous deal was set to expire in 2027.
With his previous contract expiring in just over 18 months, this had attracted the interest of the Spanish capital club, who have become notorious for signing players on a free transfer. The Athletic understands Real Madrid were planning to sign the Frenchman for nothing when his contract was due to expire. However, this is no longer possible with the former Saint-Étienne defender tying down his long term future to the Gunners.
The Arsenal defender was asked about the interest from Madrid, to which he replied: “Of course, it is tempting when a club like that shows interest in you. However, my priority was to stay at Arsenal and win trophies.” Saliba has made 146 appearances with the North London club during his time in the Premier League.
