The Blues signed two strikers last summer in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, whilst Nicolas Jackson is on loan at Bayern Munich.
Chelsea have another striker in Emmanuel Emegha arriving at the end of the season, and the Dutch international has signed a seven year deal.
Nunez left Liverpool for Saudi side Al-Hilal last summer in a deal worth a reported £46m, and has scored nine goals in 24 appearances.
However, questions have been raised about his future after he was removed from the squad for the Saudi Pro League to make room for January signing Karim Benzema.

Nunez has been linked with a return to the Premier League, and Desailly has suggested Chelsea as a possible destination.
“A club like Chelsea, or the new Manchester United, would be best for him,” he said as quoted by Metro.
“He needs to be surrounded by established, confident players who know they’re going to play every weekend and who will give him the ball on the first intention.
“That’s the small detail – when he makes a run, he needs to get the ball immediately. Otherwise he loses confidence quickly.
“I would actually recommend Núñez for Chelsea. He’s a very good player, a smart player he just needs the right environment to perform.”
Whilst Nunez could return to the Premier League, one player who might not be at Chelsea next season is Delap.
The 23-year-old has struggled since making the switch from Ipswich last summer, and has managed just two goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.
