Former Sunderland AFC winger Ian Poveda has been banned from driving for six months following a speeding offence.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 26-year-old was stopped in a black Range Rover on the A184 in South Tyneside at about 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025, while on the club’s books during an injury-hit spell of six appearances.
He did not attend North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor Brian Payne told the court the Range Rover accelerated away on the A184 and was clearly well above the limit, estimated at about 100mph in a 70mph zone.
A police officer signalled for the vehicle to stop and Poveda pulled over immediately. Defence advocate Janice Hall said his speeding lasted only a very short period.
Poveda already had nine points on his licence from three previous speeding offences. Magistrates imposed another six points and a ban under the totting up procedure.
After admitting the offence, he was fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 costs. The London-born Colombia international has previously played for Leeds United in the Premier League, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool.
He left Sunderland last month and has signed for Internacional de Bogota.
