Chelsea forward Erin Cuthbert says she would probably ‘knock someone’s head off’ trying to replicate fellow countryman Scott McTominay’s stunning goal for Scotland in their victory over Denmark last night.
The former Manchester United midfielder netted a sublime overhead kick to give Scotland the lead, with two further goals in stoppage time sealing a famous 4-2 win and qualification for next summer’s World Cup.
Cuthbert, preparing for Chelsea’s crucial Champions League clash against Barcelona tomorrow evening, admits to having felt all kinds of emotions at home watching the events unfold.
“I cannot take the smile off my face,” she explained.
“I was an absolute mess. I was watching it with my dad in the house and I just absolutely jumped on him when we scored because I couldn’t believe it.
“It would have been the most Scottish thing to do to let it slide away and I thought it was starting to slip away from us. Sometimes it’s the hope that kills you a little bit.
“To bring it back in the fashion that we did. Everybody, even today at work was talking about it. It was class.”
Asked whether she’ll be following Scotland to North America next summer, Cuthbert responded: “We had an Ibiza 2026 group chat. I think that’s now changed to USA 2026. Without a shadow of a doubt I’m going to be there.”
And Cuthbert also praised McTominay’s outrageous effort but acknowledged she should never try and replicate it.
“I think I’d knock someone’s head off if I tried to do that,” she joked. “Honestly what a goal that was. Just amazing.”
“I wouldn’t mind anything, if it goes in the net off my back or anything I’ll be happy with that.”
Chelsea welcome Barcelona to Stamford Bridge for tomorrow’s clash looking to avenge their 8-2 aggregate defeat to the Spanish side during last season’s competition.
Blues manager Sonia Bompastor confirmed that Sam Kerr will not be available for tomorrow but in better news, Lauren James is fit to start against Barcelona, in a major boost for the reigning WSL champions.
