Liverpool interest in Anthony Gordon analysed amid attacking concerns

Liverpool’s need for attacking reinforcement was another key talking point on Anfield Index’s Media Matters, where Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed reported interest in Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.

With Liverpool struggling for consistency in the final third, the conversation explored whether Gordon fits the profile required under Arne Slot, and whether a move would make sense.

Anthony Gordon link raises debate

Dave Davis introduced the topic by referencing “more recent rumours” linking Liverpool with Anthony Gordon, prompting a clear and immediate response from David Lynch.

“I’m just a big fan,” Lynch said, setting the tone for his assessment. He highlighted Gordon’s intensity and work rate as major strengths, describing him as “a grafter” who “scores goals” and “works”.

That endorsement reflects a key theme throughout the podcast, Liverpool’s need for energy and reliability in forward areas.

David Lynch outlines Gordon’s strengths

Lynch expanded on why he believes Gordon could suit Liverpool’s system. “He’s got that kind of edge to him,” he said, pointing to a mentality that could complement the current squad.

He also noted Gordon’s versatility, explaining that he “can also play right hand side, he can play down the middle as well”. That flexibility would be valuable for a Liverpool side that has struggled to find consistent attacking combinations this season.

Importantly, Lynch suggested that Gordon’s output could improve in a stronger team environment. “You’d like to think he’d be in a side that would have more chances, would be more dominant and that would suit him,” he said.

Concerns over price and output

Despite Lynch’s positive view, Davis raised reservations about the potential deal, particularly around value for money. He questioned whether Gordon’s numbers justify a significant fee, noting concerns about “output being the key thing”.

There was also discussion around how some of Gordon’s goal contributions have come from penalties, which Davis suggested could inflate perceptions of his effectiveness.

Lynch acknowledged that the “price point would be the issue”, especially with figures reportedly reaching around seventy five million. He made it clear that Liverpool would need to approach any deal carefully rather than “force” a move at that level.

Liverpool recruitment context under Arne Slot

The broader context of Liverpool’s recruitment strategy also shaped the discussion. Lynch pointed to factors such as homegrown status and age profile as reasons why Gordon could appeal.

“He’s a local lad, he’s a Liverpool fan,” Lynch said, adding further weight to the potential fit beyond pure footballing ability.

At the same time, he emphasised that Gordon would likely be one of several options rather than the sole target. “He’ll maybe be on the shortlist, but whether he’s the one that they go for, we’ll see,” he explained.
