USA international striker Patrick Agyemang completed a move to Derby County from MLS side Charlotte FC this summer.

The Rams paid an initial fee of £5.8 million to bring the forward to Pride Park, while the deal could eventually be worth £8 million in total if various add-on clauses are activated during his time at the club.

The 24-year-old has been brought in to provide a focal point in attack for John Eustace's side, with his hold-up play, aerial prowess and ability to drive forward with the ball set to give Derby a real outlet in the final third next season.

The physically imposing centre-forward also showed that he knows where the back of the net is during his time in the MLS, and the varied nature of his goals should give Derby fans confidence that he can find a way to deliver a solid return during his debut season in England.

Derby will no doubt be pleased that they have been able to sign a player who has scored goals both in the MLS and on the international stage for the USA, with former Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard claiming that the money Agyemang was offered made it difficult for Charlotte FC to keep hold of him.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Tim Howard, who earned 121 caps for the USA, has discussed Agyemang's move to Derby, claiming that money is a key reason why American players dream of moving to Europe, as per Derbyshire Live.

"Ultimately, you get a bunch of American kids... and there's a dream of going to Europe," Howard said.

"Part of that dream is glory, but part of that dream is money... so we're struggling to keep our best talent.

"We're struggling to keep our best talent, right? Because we undervalue our players, and we overvalue an $8 million transfer.

"We let that player go because that player, also being undervalued, is like, 'Yeah, but I can go to Derby County and make...' I'm guessing he's going to make two or three times his salary."

Derby will hope that they can reap the rewards of prizing Agyemang away from the MLS this summer, as they look to build on last season's 19th-placed finish in the Championship during the 2025/26 campaign.

If the striker can deliver the goods on the pitch and help to earn points with his goals, the Rams will look back and be glad they decided to offer him a significant pay-rise in order to get the deal over the line.

Derby County may need to show patience with Agyemang

While Agyemang's profile suggests that he is well-suited to Championship football, it may take him a little while to settle into his new surroundings, having previously only played in the USA during his career so far.

The 24-year-old might also need slightly longer to get up to speed once he makes his debut, given that he is set to miss the start of the season due to undergoing hernia surgery.

The Rams paid a significant fee to sign Agyemang, and at least doubled his wages, according to Howard, so there will no doubt be a sense of excitement at Pride Park when they finally get to see their new man in action.
