Cesar Peixoto arrives in English football as a virtual unknown, yet Wolves have turned to him on the back of an eye-catching spell at Gil Vicente.
ExpressAndStar.com notes this is Wolves’ most leftfield hire since Fosun chose Walter Zenga, although Zenga was a former Italy international with more than 300 Inter Milan appearances. Peixoto’s Portugal career amounts to a late cameo in a 2008 friendly defeat to Brazil.
This will be his ninth job in a coaching career a little over seven years old. His best work has come at Gil Vicente, who finished sixth in the Portuguese First Division last season.
He has been in charge there for 16 months, the longest spell of his career to date, having previously never stayed beyond 30 matches.
He broke through at Belenenses, then joined Porto under Jose Mourinho, but a Champions League knee injury against Marseille stalled him and he missed the later European triumph.
He moved to Braga in 2007 and Benfica in 2009, winning the league and cup double in 2010, then ended his career with two and a half years at Gil Vicente, retiring in 2014.
Management began at Varzim in the Portuguese second tier, where he helped avoid relegation, followed by short stints at Coimbra, Chaves and Moreirense. Two spells at Pacos Ferreira ended with relegation in 2023, then a short return to Moreirense in summer 2024 before the sack. He took over at Gil Vicente weeks later, starting the upturn Wolves will hope continues.
