Serge Gnabry will miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering a serious muscle injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for around three months.
The 30-year-old Bayern Munich forward confirmed on Wednesday that he sustained a partial tear in the adductor muscle of his right thigh during training shortly before Bayern’s 4-2 victory over VfB Stuttgart.
The recovery timeline rules him out of the tournament, which will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Gnabry shared the news on social media, expressing disappointment at missing the chance to represent Germany on football’s biggest stage. He said the last few days had been difficult to process and described the setback as the end of his World Cup dream for this summer. Despite the frustration, he added that he will support the national team from home while focusing fully on his rehabilitation and preparing to return in time for pre-season.
The injury is a significant blow for Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, as Gnabry has been a consistent presence in recent squads and an important attacking option. Unfortunately, this continues a pattern of bad luck in international tournaments for the winger, who also missed Euro 2024 and the 2018 World Cup through injury.
