Inter Goalie Throws His Hat in the Ring for the Future

Josep Martinez drew back-to-back starts for the first time in months and kept Inter in the game versus Como before their impressive comeback. The Nerazzurri have long been tipped to move on from Yann Sommer, at least as a starter, and sign a new goalie, with Guglielmo Vicario as their main target. However, the current backup has a shot to be promoted if he plays his cards right.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Calciomercato), the Spaniard was initially acquired for €14M from Genoa in 2024 to succeed the Swiss talisman eventually. However, he hasn’t won over Simone Inzaghi and Christian Chivu. The coach played coy when asked about it after the Coppa Italia semi-final. The shot-stopper has reportedly paid the price for tardiness and subpar conditioning.

Martinez is under contract with Inter until 2029 with €1.5M net wages. Per TuttoSport, he’ll likely depart if the Nerazzurri land Vicario. Sommer could stay as a backup if he accepted the role and a reduced salary.

Otherwise, they’ll go after a reliable youngster. They still somewhat control the future of Filip Stankovic, who has had two strong seasons in a row with Venezia, thanks to a 50 percent resale clause.

Our Take on Martinez and Inter

He was fine but not superb at Genoa. It’d be a big step for him to become the permanent starter. They might take an extended look at him, but he would have played more if they thought he could handle it. He was overpaid to be a deputy without the prospect of taking over. Still, a couple of years later, they’ll be able to recoup their money if they want to. He can easily be the top option for most mid-tier sides.
