Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by Monterrey in the opening match of the Club World Cup on Tuesday night in their first outing since being hammered in the Champions League final.
The Mexican side took the lead in the 25th minute, with former Spain and Real Madrid Sergio Ramos heading in powerfully from a corner.
Inter, playing for the first time since their 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain last month, pulled one back just before half-time when Lautaro Martínez tapped in from close range.
The Mexican side nearly went back in front around the hour mark with a low drive from Canales, but Inter created the better chances in the second half.
Martínez looked to have bagged a second in the 68th minute, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Both sides came close in the dying minutes, and Martínez picked up a booking during stoppage time.
It was also Cristian Chivu’s first match in charge of Inter, with the Nerazzurri returning to action at the Rose Bowl just 17 days after their heavy defeat to PSG in Munich.
