Inter Milan’s decision to go silent after Saturday’s draw with Atalanta was not taken lightly, it was the outcome of a two-hour summit held in the San Siro dressing rooms that brought together the club’s most senior figures such as Chivu and Marotta.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, Cristian Chivu, president Giuseppe Marotta, sporting director Piero Ausilio, his deputy Baccin and club manager Riccardo Ferri all gathered after the final whistle to decide on the appropriate response.

The conclusion was unanimous, the anger inside the room was too raw and too intense to put anyone in front of a microphone.

Had they done so, criticism of the officiating would have been inevitable.

Indeed, risking further sanctions on top of Chivu’s touchline ban following his dismissal during the closing stages.

Two incidents drove the fury.

The first was Sulemana’s challenge on Dumfries in the build-up to Krstovic’s equaliser.

The second, and more significant, was the failure to award a penalty after Scalvini’s foul on Frattesi.

It is a decision that, indeed, has since been privately acknowledged as incorrect by AIA officials present at the ground.

The blackout, Gazzetta make clear, was a calculated act of self-preservation.

Inter are angry. They simply chose not to say so publicly.
