Only a day after Gianluca Rocchi slammed Maurizio Mariani, further controversy erupted in an intense Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Fiorentina.
Italian journalist Maurizio Pistocchi suggested after the game that Rocchi’s tenure as Serie A referee designator could be coming to an end, according to FCInter1908.
The Nerazzurri fell victim to Mariani’s epic mistake in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Napoli, prompting Gianluca Rocchi to take action against the 43-year-old.
Indeed, Rocchi suspended both Mariani and his assistant, Daniele Bindoni, immediately after the match.
However, his strong message seems to have fallen on Simone Sozza’s deaf ears. As well as the VAR team.
Unfortunately, Inter found themselves on the receiving end of another two scandalous refereeing decisions tonight.
Sozza denied the San Siro giants two ‘textbook’ stonewall spot-kicks.
Furthermore, both incidents involved the same pair of players: Francesco Pio Esposito and Pietro Comuzzo.
The first in the first half, when Comuzzo held the Inter striker with two hands not even trying to play the ball.
The second was what is known in WWE as a clothesline. Comuzzo first tackled Esposito and then grabbed him around the neck. Still, the referee chose not to award a penalty in either instance.

After the game, Pistocchi slammed Rocchi’s regime.
“Rocchi says one thing, the referees do another, and Sozza thought it was best to turn a blind eye to Comuzzo’s free-wrestling-style hold on Esposito’s neck.
“And who knows if even the VAR, Ghersini, and the AVAR, Chiffi, knew that for Rocchi it’s over, and Orsato will take his place.”
Despite Sozza’s two unfathomable mistakes, Inter cruised to a well-deserved 3-0 victory.
Indeed, Hakan Calhanoglu notched his second Serie A brace of the season.
Moreover, summer signing Petar Sucic opened his Nerazzurri account on his return to the starting lineup.
However, it’s hard to shrug off the sense that Inter were unlucky not to have been awarded two clear penalties.
