Manuel Akanji left Manchester City for Inter Milan on loan for the 25/26 season. The Swiss defender had to leave City as the club looked to trim the size of Pep Guardiola’s squad, and Akanji wasn’t guaranteed minutes if he remained a City player for this season. Akanji has impressed for Inter this season, and Fabrizio Romano has now reported that Inter Milan is keen to sign Manuel Akanji on a permanent deal in the summer of 2026. It is now seemingly only a matter of time before one of Manchester City’s best signings in recent seasons leaves the club permanently.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Inter Milan is eager to sign Manuel Akanji permanently in the summer of 2026. Furthermore, Romano reports that Inter are very happy with the performances of Akanji. It is also reported by Romano that Inter intend to pay Manchester City €15 million to clinch a deal to sign the Swiss international. Lastly, Romano reports that unless something drastic occurs, it is expected that Manuel Akanji will complete a permanent move to Inter next summer.

It isn’t a surprise to learn that Manuel Akanji’s time at Manchester City is coming to an end.

Once Manuel Akanji left Manchester City on loan for the 25/26 season, it did seem that his City career was over. Pep Guardiola’s side does have quality young defenders on their books, such as Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah. Those three players do figure to be prominent players in the future for Manchester City. To allow them the opportunity to hopefully break into Pep Guardiola’s squad, players had to make way. Manuel Akanji falls into this basket.

Manuel Akanji has proven to be a shrewd signing by Manchester City. He arrived at City from Borussia Dortmund and established himself as a key player for Pep Guardiola’s side. He played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s treble success during the 22/23 season. Akanji also played in multiple roles for his team and never let his team down with his performances and application. Akanji deserves to be playing regular football and he has that opportunity at Inter Milan. The fact that he has impressed the Inter hierarchy enough that they want to sign him on a permanent deal isn’t a surprise. It is a credit to Akanji that he has seized the opportunity in front of him.

It would appear that Manuel Akanji will join Inter Milan on a permanent basis next summer. The Serie A giants appear eager to sign him from Manchester City at the end of this season. Akanji has been an important player for City but his time at the club now seems to be coming to an end. That isn’t a surprise but it will be sad to see another City stalwart leave the club when the time comes.
