Wingback Federico Dimarco feels that he has grown since making the return to Inter Milan in the summer of 2021.

The Nerazzurri coach spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

Dimarco is a player who came through Inter’s youth academy system.

However, the Italian international’s pathway to the Nerazzurri first team was far from a simple and straightforward one.

Dimarco went out on a number of lone moves over the years where he gained regular experience in senior football.

The 27-year-old had also had a spell in Switzerland with Sion. Inter sold him to the Swiss club but then exercised a buyback option on him.

It was during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons that Dimarco really started to impress. This came in two seasons on loan at Hellas Verona.

Dimarco became a regular starter for the Gialloblu under Ivan Juric.

This was a crucial experience for Dimarco to both show his passing range and crossing from the flank, and also hone his tactical intelligence and versatility.

When Dimarco came back to Inter from his loan at Verona, he earned the trust of coach Simone Inzaghi.

The coach gave the wingback plenty of opportunities, both in the starting eleven and off the bench.

However, Dimarco did not cement a place for himself in the first-choice lineup right away.

The Italian was still more of a backup to Ivan Perisic on the left flank at first.

But in the 2022-23 season, Dimarco really made the left-wingback role at Inter his own.

Dimarco said that “Since I returned to Milan four years ago, I’ve obviously grown in all aspects.”

“I always try to give my best in training,” the Italian international said.

“And give my contribution on the pitch.”

“But beyond that, it’s the performance from the team that matters,” Dimarco made clear. “And tomorrow the team will have to play a great match.”

Of coming up against RB Leipzig, Dimarco said that “We’re up against a strong opponent tomorrow.”

“They have top players, who have also shown it for their national teams.”

“We have to do well if we’re going to bring home a win that will get us closer to our goal,” Dimarco said.
