Beppe Bergomi believes that the sale of San Siro to AC Milan and Inter will benefit not only the clubs but the city as well.

Speaking to La Repubblica via FCInterNews, Bergomi praised the city’s decision to sell the property to the Serie A giants.

AC Milan and Inter are on the verge of purchasing the San Siro and the surrounding areas.

Indeed, the deal is in the pipeline, with the City Council’s decision expected today.

The agreement will allow the clubs to build a new state-of-the-art stadium.

Furthermore, the plan is to complete the construction by 2031.

That way, San Siro would meet UEFA’s modern standard and become eligible to host EURO 2032.

As for Milan and Inter, a new stadium would boost revenue opportunities and improve fan experience.

Therefore, it’s a win-win deal.

Meanwhile, Beppe Bergomi sees it as a step forward for the entire Milan community.

Asked whether it was the right move, Bergomi replied: “Yes. We couldn’t wait any longer.

“Milan has already lost the 2027 Champions League final. Now, there was a risk of losing the European Championship as well.

“Our city cannot miss out on events of this level; we must seize opportunities like this.

“I’m very attached to San Siro, as you can imagine,” Bergomi added.

“I’ve been traveling across Europe for Sky to comment on matches for years, and I realize we’ve fallen behind.

“That can’t happen in Milan, a city always used to looking forward. We have to accept change.

“I know it’s difficult, but it’s inevitable. Opposing committees? Not just them, there’s a lot of discontent. People tell me even when I go to the bar for coffee.

“We’ve already experienced metro works; we know what’s coming and the inconvenience it brings.

“But we must remain optimistic because the whole area will be better afterward.

“San Siro has two souls: one elegant and one more peripheral, just a few meters apart. An overall improvement can only be positive.”

New Design

Bergomi believes there’s no longer a margin for error.

“You can’t make mistakes,” he continued. “The design must be perfect. And you have to start with the view.

“Because in no stadium in the world can you see the game as well as at San Siro.

“Even from the third tier, the corners, or the stands, you never lose full perception of what’s happening on the pitch. So that’s one area where mistakes can’t happen.

“Why change then? Because all modern services are lacking. Simply put, bathrooms accessible to every sector and every spectator, not just VIPs.

“Bars, for example, these are functions you can no longer do without.

“Two stadiums? We already struggle to build one new stadium, let alone two…

“For Milan and Inter, it has always been this way: a single stadium, and that uniqueness is a value.”
