Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi heaped praised on veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer despite recent criticism.
Speaking to Sky Sport via FCInterNews, the former defender highlighted the 37-year-old’s importance to the club.
Yann Sommer has come under scrutiny after several underwhelming performances in the first half of the season.
However, the ex-Bayern Munich shot-stopper remains Cristian Chivu’s first choice between the sticks ahead of Josep Martinez.
Despite his first-team status, Sommer is likely to leave the Nerazzurri at the end of the season.
Indeed, his current contract runs out in June, with Inter reluctant to offer him a new deal.
Furthermore, Beppe Marotta is already scouring the market for potential replacements.
In addition to Tottenham Hotspur’s Guglielmo Vicario, Inter are also keeping close tabs on several other keepers.
Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu and Cagliari’s Elia Caprile have also emerged as possible targets for the San Siro giants.
However, Manchester City superstar Gianluigi Donnarumma remains the club’s dream signing.

“The opposing teams know that Inter make extensive use of the goalkeeper,” Bergomi said. “
“The Champions League final comes to mind, or even Arsenal, who on Tuesday kept pressing the goalkeeper whenever the ball was played back,” he added.
“Inter, unlike Milan, need to build from the back and to have control.
“They don’t have counter-attacking players; they have players for build-up play.
“They envelop you, they dazzle you with the way they play, but they have to play like this.
“Then I agree that you shouldn’t take excessive risks, but having someone like Sommer is far too important for Inter.”
Finally, he praised Inter’s defensive setup under Chivu.
“Inter allow few chances, but when they do concede them, they’re significant,” he finished.
Sommer will likely start in Wednesday’s high-stakes UEFA Champions League showdown against Borussia Dortmund.
