Legendary former Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder feels that he was “robbed” of the Ballon d’Or in 2010.
Speaking at the World Cup of ESports, via FCInter1908, the Dutchman looked back on his failure to win football’s most prestigious individual honour.
It would be fair to say that Sneijder had a memorable 2010.
During the 2009-10, the former Ajax and Real Madrid midfielder played a key role as Inter won the European Treble.
Sneijder helped the Nerazzurri lift the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and the Champions League.
There were plenty of massive goals and assists from the Dutchman. Particularly in Europe.
And then Sneijder had a similarly outstanding World Cup with the Netherlands.
The Oranje were not able to win the tournament and lift that trophy for the first time. They fell 1-0 to Spain in the final, in a tight match which went to extra time.
But it was a memorable run to the final for the Dutch. This included knocking out Brazil along the way.
And Sneijder more than had his role to play in that run.
In spite of that year of triumph, Sneijder was not even on the podium for the Ballon d’Or.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi won the award.
And then just behind Messi were two of his club teammates, Xavi and Andres Iniesta. They had been instrumental to Spain’s victory at the World Cup.
And Sneijder didn’t mince words about the snu
“They robbed the Ballon d’Or from me in 2010,” the legendary former midfielder said.
“But honestly, I’m happy that people are still talking about it in 2014. Fourteen years later.”
Sneijder said, “People tell me, Wesley, they robbed you that year.”
“Imagine if I’d won the Ballon d’Or, and people had said that I’d taken it from someone more deserving.”
