Inter Milan and Torino clash in their Serie A opener on Monday evening, with both sides eager to make a positive start to the 2025/26 campaign.
The Nerazzurri welcome the Granata to San Siro in what promises to be an intriguing encounter between two teams under new management.
New head coach Cristian Chivu will make his debut at the helm of Inter Milan after replacing Simone Inzaghi in the summer. The former Inter defender, who won the Champions League with the club in 2010, faces his first major test as the Nerazzurri look to bounce back from last season’s disappointing campaign that saw them lose the title to Napoli on the final day.
Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards from last season, while Francesco Pio Esposito is also sidelined through suspension. Davide Frattesi remains a doubt after undergoing abdominal surgery and only recently returning to training. Croatian midfielder Petar Sucic is expected to make his Serie A debut and could start in holding midfield in Calhanoglu’s absence. Federico Dimarco is fit despite suffering a thigh bruise in the friendly against Olympiacos.
Marco Baroni has taken charge of Torino following Paolo Vanoli’s departure, signing a two-year contract with the Granata. The former Lazio boss faces a challenging rebuilding task after key departures during the summer transfer window.
The club has lost influential midfielder Samuele Ricci to AC Milan and goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic to Napoli. Baroni acknowledged he was “well aware” of these significant sales when accepting the role and emphasised his preference for “hard work over proclamations”.
Mixed preseason form concluded with a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos, with goals from Dimarco and Marcus Thuram. Under Chivu, the team is adapting to new tactical approaches while maintaining their 3-5-2 formation.
The Granata finished 11th last season with 10 wins, 14 draws and 14 defeats but started the season well with a win in the Copa Italian against Modena. Baroni aims to instil greater tactical discipline and push toward European qualification in his first season.
Inter Milan: Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Sucic, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro Martinez.
Torino: F. Israel; Biraghi, Maripan, Saul Coco, Lazaro; Casadei, Anjorin; Aboukhlal, Vlasic, Cyril Ngonge; G. Simeone
