Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta is keeping a close eye on Dusan Vlahovic and his stalled contract negotiations at Juventus, with a free transfer swoop very much on his mind should the Serbia striker fail to agree a renewal before his deal expires in June.
It remains his speciality.
And Vlahovic, despite giving priority to a Juventus renewal, has not yet reached an agreement with the club.
That gap is where Marotta sees his opportunity.
The blueprint is familiar.
Marotta signed the likes of Thuram and Calhanoglu on a free transfer, and a similar operation for Vlahovic would represent another statement of intent from one of football’s shrewdest operators.
The financial logic is compelling.
Thuram appears to be edging out of Inter’s long-term plans, with the club prepared to listen to offers of around €65 million this summer.
Newcastle are currently among the reportedly interested parties.
Should Vlahovic arrive on a free transfer, that Thuram money becomes available for investment across the rest of a squad that needs significant reinforcement.
The defence, midfield and wide positions all require attention.
Therefore freeing up funds by not spending on a striker would give Inter considerably more flexibility elsewhere.
The scenario is not yet concrete.
But Marotta is watching closely, and if Juventus cannot find an agreement, Inter will be ready to move quickly.
