Inter to Try to Take Advantage of Roma Financial Woes

Inter tried to sign Manu Koné from Roma with a blitz last summer but came up empty-handed, partially because of the protests of the Giallorossi faithful. The capital club initially seemed open, but then ownership intervened and nipped it in the bud.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri’s pursuit has been simply postponed. They are aware that the counterparty will have to sacrifice some players due to their FFP obligations. The Frenchman is arguably their most profitable asset.

Inter bounced back with Andy Diouf from Lens after missing out on Koné, but their interest hasn’t waned. Christian Chivu is plotting to permanently switch to a 3-4-2-1 in the future, which would require two energetic midfielders to have the right balance. Oaktree had signed off on a €40M investment for the 24-year-old.

Due to an ongoing settlement agreement with UEFA, Roma will have to contain the total losses between 2024 and 2026 to €60M. They were in the red by €60M two seasons ago and by €10/15M for the past one. They didn’t record massive ‘plusvalenze’ in the recent window, as they didn’t want to weaken the squad after hiring Gian Piero Gasperini. The Giallorossi might have to find about €90M by June 30th to reach their goal and avoid sanctions.

Our Take on Koné, Inter, and Roma

The Nerazzurri are a safe bet to do something big in the midfield, as Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have likely reached the end of the road, but the magnitude will also hinge on Diouf and Petar Sucic. As for the capital club, their economic prospects depend on qualifying for the Champions League. We’ll see whether the math holds up, as these things are rarely that straightforward.
