Simone Inzaghi feels that goalkeeper Josep Martinez is “the future of Inter Milan” after his Serie A debut for the club against Genoa.

The Nerazzurri coach was full of praise for the debutante in a press conference after the 1-0 Serie A win, as reported by FCInterNews. He also said that he’d have congratulated his players “even after a draw.”

Goalkeeper Josep Martinez has had to wait a while to make his first Serie A start for Inter Milan. The former RB Leipzig goalkeeper joined the Nerazzurri from Genoa last summer.

And it was against his former team the Grifone that Martinez has finally put on the gloves for Inter in Serie A.

It was an injury to first-choice Inter keeper Yann Sommer that handed Martinez this opportunity.

Inter signed the 26-year-old to be the backup to Sommer, and then to eventually succeed the Swiss.

But Sommer has proven a tough player to displace from the Inter starting eleven so far.

The Swiss suffered a thumb fracture in training this week.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said that Martinez “did very well.”

“But he’s a player we wanted to sign,” the coach made clear. “We chose him last summer.”

“It would have been possible to sign other goalkeepers. But the club made a choice to sign him.”

Inzaghi noted that “Sommer already has consistency.”

“But Josep knows that he will be the future of Inter,” continued the Nerazzurri coach.

“He’s worked in silence. He deserved an evening like this.”

Inzaghi said that he “had no doubts” about Josep Martinez. “Not he has to keep going the way that he has been in training, the matches are a consequence of that.”

And of this evening’s victory over Genoa, Inzaghi said that “I’m very happy.”

“I congratulate the guys,” the Inter coach went on. “They played a great match, and a tough one, against a quality opponent.”

“We knew that Genoa had put a lot into it. We did well not to start to get nervous, and we stayed composed.”

“We’d already hit the top corner before the well-deserved goal,” Inzaghi noted.

“In Italy, all the matches are tricky,” he added. “You just have to look around.”

The Nerazzurri coach then added that “I would have congratulated the guys on the performance, even without a win.”
