Ipswich Town have begun the search for a new head coach after Kieran McKenna chose to step down to spend time with his family. They are new Premier League rivals for Leeds United.

The club said in a statement that McKenna will leave this summer after five seasons in charge, having overseen three promotions in four seasons, including two to the Premier League. He departs after the second of those top-flight promotions, which brought jubilant scenes and a deepened bond with supporters.

He spoke of gratitude, pride, sadness and contentment, and felt this was the right moment to step aside after securing a second promotion to the top flight last season on another memorable final day. He plans to take a break from management and devote time to his family, while thanking the board, staff, players and supporters.

Chairman Mark Ashton described his work as simply incredible in his first managerial role and placed him alongside club legends. He also offered thanks and confirmed McKenna will always be welcome at Portman Road.

Gary O’Neil is the early favourite to replace him. Ipswich have climbed from League One to the Premier League under McKenna, promoted back to next season’s top flight as 2025-26 Championship runners-up.
