The Tractor Boys' interest in Palmer was first revealed by talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, though significant developments have since been shared by Lewis Cox of the Express and Star.

Palmer's impending exit represents the first significant hurdle for Tony Mowbray, who made an emotional return to the Hawthorns last month after the departure of Carlos Corberan to Valencia.

Mowbray has completed two signings in Isaac Price and highly-rated Tottenham Hotspur prospect Will Lankshear, but will now have to prepare for life without his first-choice shot-stopper as Albion bid to seal a second successive top-six finish.

West Bromwich Albion's Josh Griffiths set to join Ipswich Town in £5m deal

Cox has reported that Palmer is set to undertake a medical ahead of a £5 million move to Portman Road. Ipswich have been searching for a goalkeeper, with both Arijanet Muric and Christian Walton failing to impress for the strugglers in the Premier League this season.

Kieran McKenna has now seemingly found his man, though, and barring any late hitches, Palmer looks set to be unveiled as an Ipswich player imminently.

Importantly, the 28-year-old's sale will represent 100 percent profit for West Brom given his status as an academy graduate, which will help the club when it comes to Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules.

Palmer has been Albion's first-choice goalkeeper in the Championship for the last two seasons, establishing himself among the finest shot-stoppers throughout the division. It had taken a while for the academy graduate to cement himself in the first team amid loans to the likes of Kidderminster Harriers, Plymouth Argyle, Lincoln City and Luton Town, but he has been among the side's most consistent performers in recent times.

Palmer has made 30 appearances for West Brom this season, conceding just 27 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets.

West Brom set to recall Josh Griffiths from Bristol Rovers amid Alex Palmer, Ipswich Town deal

Ipswich's deal for Palmer is set to have a real knock-on effect, with Albion now poised to recall Josh Griffiths from his loan spell with League One side Bristol Rovers.

That is also according to Cox's report, leaving the Gas dealt a significant blow as a consequence of Palmer's sale.

Griffiths, who has made 13 appearances for Albion, has made a strong impression at the Memorial Stadium and is reportedly being recalled to directly replace Palmer, with Mowbray's side not looking to dip back into the market to fill his void.
