Ipswich Town's Liam Delap has met Man Utd officials to discuss a move to Old Trafford.
Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has held face-to-face talks with Man United officials as he considers a move to Old Trafford in the summer.
The 22-year-old only joined the Tractor Boys last summer, and despite their relegation, he has enjoyed a fantastic first campaign at Portman Road, scoring 12 goals.
Such form has caught the eye of many Premier League clubs, and with reports revealing Delap has a £30m release clause due to Ipswich’s relegation, it means a summer exit is inevitable.
It’s no secret that Man United are monitoring the England U21 international as they look to address their issues in the final third, and they have made contact with the player over a transfer.
The Athletic have stated that Delap travelled to Manchester for talks with executives at the Red Devils as he seeks more details on any potential deal.
However, that doesn’t mean a move to Man United is a formality, as the update does add that Delap is expected to do similar with other clubs who are chasing his signature. They also say that the forward will take his time before making a call on his next move.
Ipswich have known since relegation was confirmed that Delap would be leaving, as his release clause makes him a bargain in the current climate.
With that in place, there’s not much the Suffolk outfit can do, and it’s now just about waiting for the player to make his mind up on where he wants to go, and then you would expect a deal to be finalised swiftly.
From Ipswich’s perspective, it’s a case of the sooner, the better, so they can move on, get a new player in, and focus on winning promotion next season.
The recruitment team at Portman Road will already have a list of options to replace Delap, and it will be interesting to see who they sign, as Kieran McKenna has specific demands from his number nine, who will need to score goals and be a focal point for the side.
For Delap, it’s obviously a huge decision, and even with Man Utd’s struggles this season, they appeal due to the size of the club - and they could offer Champions League football if they beat Spurs in Wednesday’s Europa League final.
