Ipswich Town beat Birmingham City 2-1 at Portman Road to rise from fourth to second in the Championship.

Carlos Vicente put Birmingham ahead in the 32nd minute, but after Azor Matusiwa went off injured (39.), Ben Johnson levelled from Darnell Furlong's cross (41.) before Kasey McAteer finished George Hirst's through ball (45.).

After the restart, Christian Walton made three saves as the Tractor Boys protected their lead. James Beadle had earlier denied Hirst with a sharp stop before the interval.

After the hour mark, Birmingham brought on Tomoki Iwata and Ethan Laird to chase an equaliser. The Tractor Boys responded with Jaden Philogene and Chuba Akpom (75.) to add fresh legs.

Ben Johnson needed treatment late on but continued as Birmingham pressed in the closing stages.

The Tractor Boys registered five shots on target from 11 attempts and edged possession at 54.1%. Birmingham posted four shots on target from nine attempts.

Next, the Tractor Boys visit Norwich City. Birmingham host Wrexham.
