FLW's Ipswich fan pundit has given his verdict on whether the club should've pushed harder to sign Divin Mubama this summer
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Divin Mubama has bagged two goals in two games for Stoke City since joining from Manchester City on loan earlier this summer.
The Potters won the race to the 20-year-old’s signature despite facing competition from the likes of Ipswich Town.
The Tractor Boys have been searching for a new forward option throughout the transfer window, with Liam Delap making the move away from Portman Road.
But Mubama opted instead to join Mark Robins’ side, where he has made a bright start to life in the Championship.
When asked if the club should’ve pushed harder for Mubama, FLW’s Ipswich fan pundit claimed that it could be a move the Suffolk outfit go on to regret.
He believes that it depends on what signing the recruitment team are able to get over the line instead.
“Hindsight is a wonderful thing with Mubama,” Wilkin told Football League World.
“I watched a bit of him at Stoke but not too much, the goals he scored have been poacher-style finishes, but he does look like he’s getting up to speed with the Championship pretty well.
“When we were first linked with him, I said that despite his youth and lack of game time, he was impressive in Premier League 2, and we’re still short of a striker.
“A lot of deals have fallen through, so it is a bit of a shame that we seem to have missed out on a good player there.
“Whether [CEO Mark] Ashton will regret or whether Ipswich will regret it in the long-term depends on who we get in between now and the end of the window, really.
“But early signs are we may have missed a gem there.”
Ipswich drew their two opening league fixtures 1-1, and will face Preston North End next up on 23 August.
Ipswich are looking to reinforce their attacking options, but have been unable to nail down any of their primary targets, including Mubama.
The 20-year-old has made a bright start to life in the Championship, which will be met with envy at Portman Road.
Two goals in two games is a very promising indication of the kind of goal scorer that the youngster can be at this level already.
If he can continue this kind of form over the course of the whole season, then Ipswich will feel quite aggrieved they didn’t push harder for the move.
