Israel Reyes will miss the remainder of the Liguilla after being named in Mexico’s squad for their pre-World Cup camp. He will be Club América’s lone representative with the national team at the World Cup.
According to Americayya.net, the call-up was announced yesterday and Javier Aguirre opted to take only one player from Club América, having previously selected as many as five from the side.
Erick Sánchez, Alexis Gutiérrez, Kevin Álvarez and Ramón Juárez were omitted, along with the previously known absence of Luis Ángel Malagón because of injury.
There had been confusion over whether Reyes could play in the Liguilla, as Mexico’s camp does not start until 6 May, a timetable that suggested he might make the first leg.
However, all called-up players were given a week’s break under FIFA rules, and will be with Mexico from 6 May until the World Cup ends. As a result, Reyes will not be available for América’s quarter-final ties, nor any semi-final or final should they advance.
