Jan Molby Reacts to Andy Robertson’s Potential Spurs Move

When Anfield Index’s Molby on the Spot podcast dropped its latest episode, the headline topic was clear: Andy Robertson’s potential move to Tottenham Hotspur before the January window closes. Host Trev Downey and Liverpool legend Jan Molby dissected the breaking story with candid insight, framing it as more than just idle speculation.

Downey opened the discussion with a reference to David Ornstein’s report, noting, “The link has come from David Ornstein who doesn’t tend to have information that’s too far off the mark.” The suggestion is that this isn’t transfer window noise, but something more substantial. “This one seems to have some legs,” Downey continued, pointing to Robertson’s need for game time ahead of the World Cup and his openness to a move, even referencing a prior willingness to leave in the summer.

Robbo’s Perspective vs Liverpool’s Reality

Molby responded with the kind of nuance only a former player can offer. “It makes a lot of sense if you’re Andrew Robertson and if you’re Spurs,” he admitted, while quickly adding, “But it doesn’t make any sense if you’re Liverpool with the defensive problems we’ve got.”

The rumour, according to Molby, involves a “permanent deal with a small fee involved,” a detail that has rightly left many Liverpool fans puzzled. For a club with mounting defensive concerns, losing a stalwart like Robertson in mid-season would be a perplexing move.

Molby acknowledged the player’s legendary status at the club: “He’s a legend and he is something special, Robbo, isn’t he? Surely there’s not a single Liverpool fan who’s got any issues with him.” That goodwill, however, could be Liverpool’s undoing. Molby noted, “You always felt that Liverpool wants to do the best for him and they never want to stand in his way.”

Defensive Gaps and Tactical Setbacks

One of the more pressing concerns raised was the logistical fallout of such a transfer. With Kostas Tsimikas currently out on loan at Roma and struggling, and Joe Gomez stretched thin covering multiple positions, Liverpool’s options would become dangerously thin. Downey highlighted the problem: “That would mean Joe Gomez would have to be the only cover we have for right back, left back and both centre halves.”

Molby concurred, pointing out that even if Tsimikas returned, he’d merely “be second choice for the remainder of the campaign and spell out Kirkes every so often.” The lack of depth is a serious issue and Robertson’s departure would only exacerbate it.

More Than a Full-Back

What the conversation made especially clear is that Robertson’s role extends beyond the pitch. Downey summed it up best: “He does bring something else… a very important one in terms of the leadership capacity that he has in the squad. We’re losing them, aren’t we? He’s one of them. There’s not many left.”

Downey didn’t mince words when evaluating the idea of selling Robertson: “Doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to take away someone who is such a loud and boisterous and influential character from the squad.” Yet, both men agreed that if Robertson pushes for the move, Liverpool may feel compelled to accommodate him.

“If he pushes for this, Robbo, I think he might get this move,” Molby predicted.

Spurs’ Gain Is Liverpool’s Loss

From a Spurs perspective, this transfer could be transformative. “The connection to Spurs seem to be quite excited,” Molby said, noting the club’s youthful setup and injury issues. “If it’s anything Spurs needs right now, it’s an experienced man.”

Molby was clear on what Robertson could offer Tottenham: “They would be truly amazed at how good he is… sometimes, you know, that type of player, they need to be at your club for you to fully appreciate how special they are.”

He went on to suggest that in a new tactical setup, Robertson could thrive even more. “In a different system, I think he might be even more effective.”
